Skmaqn-Port La Joye—Fort Amherst National Historic Site is west of Charlottetown on Hwy. 1, then southeast on Hwy. 19 to Rocky Point. The site consists of 89 hectares (220 acres) of woods and rolling grasslands overlooking Hillsborough Bay and Charlottetown Harbour where the French built their first European-style settlement in 1720. The English took the area in 1758 and constructed Fort Amherst, which quickly fell into disrepair after 1768 when the official military presence was withdrawn; only the earthworks remain.
